the story

                                (chronicles)
Laguna Loire was a soldier with the Galbadian army, based in Deling City. During that period, he frequently visits Galbadia hotel with his close friends Ward Zaback and Kiros Seagul, and harbours a huge infatuation for Julia Heartilly, a lovely piano player in a highclass bar at the hotel. She soon grows to notice him, and one evening after trying (and failing) to talk to her, she comes over to him and invites him to her room. They talk, and Laguna tells her of his dreams and ambitions. She tells him she has written a song, because he had inspired her. But he had to go.
Later, it appears he has been sent off to war by the Galbadian army; dispatched to an excavation site in Centra. The team end up severely injured by the Esthar soldiers and come to a dead end at the edge of a high cliff overlooking the sea. They decide to take the plunge.

        The friends get separated.

Ward lost his voice and ends up working as a janitor at D-District Prison.
Kiros took a month to recover from his injuries, and went on a journey to search for his friend Laguna.

Laguna somehow ends up in the obscure and serene town of Winhill where he was nursed back to health by a woman named Raine Leonhart, the owner of Winhill's local pub. Over time, he starts to develop feelings for Raine and is very fond of Raine's adopted girl, Ellone.

(Ellone is a girl who possesses a mysterious power: the ability to send a person's consciousness back in time. The sorceress ruling at that time, Adel, wanted Ellone for her powers, and Ellone's parents died trying to protect her. Raine then took Ellone as her own.)

Although Laguna fully recovers in 6 months, he stayed at Winhill for approximately one year. One day a visitor arrives looking for Laguna; it is Kiros.

Laguna learns that Julia Heartilly had married a General Caraway after her true love, a soldier that she was waiting for, failed to return.
They overhear Raine and Ellone talking about Raine's feelings towards Laguna; how she likes him very much but she knows he is a wanderer at heart.

Kiros presents a writing opportunity for Laguna at Timber Maniacs (a magazine company), but Laguna is uncertain; he reveals that he has grown attached to this town, especially to Raine and Ellone. Kiros remarks how Laguna has changed.
One night, Laguna shyly proposes to Raine with a ring. They get married. Shortly after, Ellone is captured by the sorceress. Laguna leaves Raine to search for her.

Raine finds out that she is pregnant after Laguna leaves. She gives birth to the child and dies before Laguna could return to see his child. It appears that the baby was sent to an orphanage after Raine passed away.

During his search for Ellone, Laguna has exhausted all his finances. He takes up a temporary job as an actor, somewhere around Trabia Canyon. Later, Laguna comes to Edea's orphanage looking for Ellone, but Edea tells him she doesn't know of such a little girl. Little did they both know that Ellone would be under Edea's care a short while into the future.

Another place Laguna might have visited during his journey is Shumi Village, where the Shumi tribe resides underground. The Shumis thought he was a bandit at first, but they quickly grew to respect and admire him, especially the Elder's attendant. It seems like Laguna's travelling stories have made the attendant so fascinated by the wonders of the outside world that he is unwilling to accept his fate as the next Elder, where he has to live a life of fixed destinies.

Laguna goes to Esthar to continue searching for Elle, and ends up as a Prisoner of War. A fellow prisoner tells him of a resistance plan to overthrow the powerful Sorceress Adel. Laguna meets Dr Odine, an eccentric, mad but brilliant scientist who knows Ellone's whereabouts. Laguna finally reunites with Ellone.

While trying to get Ellone out, Laguna engages the help of some resistant members. To repay them for their help, Laguna helps them defeat the sorceress and seal her powers. The citizens of Esthar were so grateful of being freed from Adel that they appoint Laguna as their President. With his job commitments, Laguna is unable to return to Winhill.
Somehow, later, he receives news of Raine's death. It is unclear whether he knows about his son, Squall. Since then, he has been ruling as Esthar President.

During his journeys, Laguna chronicles his journeys in articles, publishing them in a magazine called Timber Maniacs.
