winhill's hostility

They hated the soldier, a stranger.

Winhill seemed oddly harsh to Laguna.

OLD WOMAN: It's been quite some time now since you've recovered from your injuries.
LAGUNA: Thanks to everyone in town!
OLD WOMAN: This here town must be quite dull for a young lad like yourself. Perhaps it's time you returned to Deling City?

SHOPKEEPER: ...The hell!? You've recovered. Now get outta here!
LAGUNA: (They hate me... But try to converse.) I just wanna chat.
SHOPKEEPER: ...How's Raine?
LAGUNA: Uhh, she's doing fine.
SHOPKEEPER: That's good. But it'd be even better if you left!

Winhill's residents clearly do not like Laguna who, by all accounts, is a man of great integrity and kindness, who is well-received everywhere he goes. They also seem extremely protective of Raine. Perhaps once, Raine had been deceived or hurt by a soldier who visited the town, and the villagers (who show obvious signs of looking after Raine like she was their child) fear she could be hurt again.

Whatever the reasons for their uncongenial manner, Laguna never once stopped being nice to the town out of pure gratitude to the place for putting him up when he was wounded.

Winhill should be more forgiving; but their nature can be understood. They simply loved Raine too much.
